work is not always required. there is such a thing as sacred idleness. ~george macdonald
you know that saying that goes something like, if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it does it make a sound? well for me sometimes it’s more like if i see something wonderful and i don’t take a picture of it, did it really happen.
it’s so silly i know… but sometimes i have to remember that it’s ok to not take pictures. give myself permission to put the camera down.
yesterday morning was a prime example. it was a spectacularly glorious morning. cool temp, very light breeze. i was sitting in my favorite chair in the backyard with my favorite coffee cup. just enjoying the peace and quiet. about the time i got really settled, the sun came up over the neighborhood houses and the light was so beautiful. i mean it was the perfect golden light shining on my back flower bed. i watched as it bounced off the leaves of the big tree. i saw it twinkling in the dried up seed heads of my ornamental grasses.
as i was sitting there, soaking up the goodness…taking it all in, i had the fleeting thought – i should go get my camera.
but i didn’t.
the thing is…i am an Artist before i am a photographer. it’s important to me to keep that straight in my mind. and i believe that sitting in my backyard soaking up His glory and His peace was practicing my Art.
wherever you are today…i give you permission to put down your camera, or your pencil, or your paintbrush, or your gardening gloves. there is Art in rest.
for I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish. ~jeremiah 31:25
