as if i haven’t gone on enough about it, i have really come to love this late-summer/early-fall season…a special season all its own in my book. so i wanted to make a wreath that kind of reflected that.
of course a deco-mesh wreath came to mind, but i wanted something a little more earthy. which then made me think of burlap and so i decided to go that route. i also wanted to incorporate some sunflowers which to me just so perfectly represent this time of year.
anyway, i just love how it turned out so i wanted to share with you how i made it.
i started with two rolls of burlap. it’s similar to the wide rolls of deco-mesh, but at my store it was a little shorter in length. and because i wanted it to be nice and full, i decided to go with two. also i got one roll of a soft, textured green ribbon, some wheat stalks, and a 16 inch deco-mesh wire wreath form. (at the last minute i also grabbed some raffia out of my craft cabinet.)
so the burlap wreath starts out just like the last deco-mesh wreath i made. just take 10-12 inch long lengths of burlap and attach it to the wreath using the wires. i used one roll of burlap around the outside of the wreath.
and then i used about three-fourths of the second roll around the inside.
i really loved the texture of this ribbon and i thought it would be a pretty color contrast with the burlap.
so i just weaved it in and about the wreath.
next i cut the sunflowers into individual stems and hot-glued them in a cluster near the bottom. and i used hot glue because the burlap doesn’t hold onto the embellishments quite like the deco-mesh does. and with the wheat stalks, i just took a small bunch (3-5 individual stalks) and hot glued those in as well. finally as a finishing touch, i took lengths of raffia and weaved them throughout the wreath.
one other thing about the burlap i noticed is that it’s kind of floppy – doesn’t hold it’s shape quite like deco-mesh. but what i did was {technical term here} smoosh it around a bit until it looked right. and i think it is just cute as can be.
to me this wreath is kind of like my love letter to september.
i highly encourage you to ‘write’ one of your own.
love, kelly
I just found some awesome purple and lime green deco mesh just in time for Halloween. I’m so excited!! 🙂
I think it’s just perfect. You are so talented.
Very cool! I love burlap and this wreath really captures that in-between seasonal decorating.
This turned out beautifully! You must have the prettiest front door in the neighborhood!
